The Dormition of the Theotokos, celebrated on August 15th, is a major feast day in the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic Churches. It commemorates the death and glorification of Mary, the Mother of God (Theotokos), and her being taken up into heaven. This event is also sometimes referred to as the Assumption.
